FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Professor Stuart Ross Taylor (Emeritus Professor, Australian National University) has been appointed an honorary Companion in the General Division of the Order of Australia.
The honor recognizes Professor Taylor ‘for outstanding service to science, particularly in the fields of geochemistry and cosmochemistry as a researcher, writer and educator.
'Emeritus Professor Ross Taylor is an eminent, world-renowned scientist who has contributed to the reputation and standing of Australian science internationally since the mid 1960s.
'Over the past 40 years Professor Taylor has been considered to be one of the world's pre-eminent geochemists, pioneering several analytical methods, and a dominant force in the field of trace element and lunar geochemistry. He carried out the first analysis of the Moon rock samples brought back by Apollo 11 in 1969 and remained a principal investigator for NASA for the next 20 years.
'Professor Taylor set up research programmes for studying the chemical composition of continental rocks and has been a pioneer in the study of the Earth's crust and lithosphere. He developed the "andesite model" of the continental crust and his use of the mass spectrometer in examining trace elements in geological materials was groundbreaking; beginning the field of ultratrace element geochemistry. Professor Taylor's research and writings have addressed many of the fundamental questions facing earth scientists, including the origin and composition of the Earth, Moon, planets and their satellites; the origin, constitution and evolution of the Earth's continents and the consequences of meteorite and asteroid impacts on the evolution of planets.'
Professor Stuart Ross Taylor is an active member of the Geochemical Society including recently serving on the GS Board of Directors.
The Order of Australia was instituted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1975 as 'an Australian society of honour for the purpose of according recognition to Australian citizens and other persons for achievement or for meritorious service'. The Order consists of The Sovereign, The Governor-General of Australia (The Chancellor of the Order), The Prince of Wales, The Official Secretary to the Governor-General (The Secretary of the Order) and recipients who have received awards.
