SAINT LOUIS, MO, USA -The Organic Geochemistry Division of the Geochemical Society has awarded the 2010 Alfred Treibs Medal to John Volkman of CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research in Hobart, Tasmania. The award committee reports "John's work is the basis for much of modern biomarker research. He long ago distinguished himself as the world's authority on the lipid chemistry of microalgae. The theme for much of his work has been the chemistry of extant microalgae and other organisms and the results have led to ever-expanding research on the implications for natural products in petroleum." The award ceremony will be held at the 2011 IMOG meeting in Interlaken, Switzerland.

The Alfred Treibs Award is awarded annually by the Organic Geochemistry Division of the Geochemical Society for major achievements, over a period of years, in organic geochemistry.
