Communicating science in a crisis

We are pleased to announce our first 2025 online seminar! Professor Christopher Reddy (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution) will showcase his work in science communication during environmental crises. Please join us on February 11th!

Date: Tuesday, February 11th 2025
Time: 7am PST; 9am CST; 10am EST; 2pm GMT; 3pm CET

Talk details:
As an organic geochemist, I had the unique opportunity to collaborate, inform, and advise a range of interested parties following the 2010 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico. I learned a lot about the geochemistry of oil spills and even more about myself, the role of academia in a crisis, and how the world works. Based on these experiences, I will identify the significant challenges scientists face during an environmental crisis when clear, consistent communication matters most. Then, I will offer advice on navigating the maze of competing interests to deliver actionable information.
